I’ve noted in nearly 6 decades on earth, that temptations are rampant and are everywhere: temptations of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life; but my observation is that the easiest temptation to fall prey to is usually an invisible one. The temptation to become offended and angry, then bitter can so easily slip in between the cracks and burrows deep into our hearts. Much like a parasite, it feeds on the host and grows larger and larger over time, even though hidden in the dark places of our hearts.
Family and loved ones can hurt the quickest and deepest.
Church hurts…oh my, some of us could write a book on those!
Hurts from the past, even back to childhood; a bully, a hateful rival, comments from decades past that dug in deep can still be recalled.
Bitterness is a cancer. I can’t prove it, but I believe it sets off a chemical change in the brain and body that shortens life.
I’m adding bitterness to my list of hindrances that keep us from God’s purposes for our lives and to advance His kingdom.
Bitterness Fear Shame
What can we do? We are born again, seed of Abraham. We need not be locked in these prisons. We are heirs, according to the promise.
Bitterness is a result of unforgiveness. God warns us in His word of the consequences of this.
Forgiveness is not a feeling. It’s a CHOICE. As people of God, we can make the conscious choice, or CHOOSE, to forgive. It’s just that simple…choose.
It’s not easy, but it is a choice God allows us to make. Feelings will come later, but only you can CHOOSE to walk away from bitterness.
His grace is indeed sufficient.
